Notes, letters and half-finished thoughts left upon the desk between journeys.

The Traveller with the Emerald Beads

A wandering traveller arrived this morning carrying a small tin box that rattled softly, and would not tell me where it had come from. Inside were emerald beads unlike any I have seen before — green in one light, almost black in another, as though each had swallowed a little of the forest it grew beside.

They are resting on the windowsill now, growing used to the shop. I have not yet decided what they will become. I suspect they already know, and are simply waiting for me to catch up.

A Quiet Evening, and Rather a Lot of Candles

Rain kept the workshop unusually quiet today. Even the candle flames seemed reluctant to dance.

So I spent the evening sorting the drawer of odd findings — the single clasps, the beads without pairs, the little brass charms whose stories I have long since forgotten. Nothing was finished. Everything was tidied. Some evenings that is exactly the right amount of work.

Autumn at the Workshop Window

Autumn has begun whispering through the workshop windows again. I suspect darker curiosities will soon appear upon the shelves.

There is a particular hour in late summer when the light turns the colour of old honey and everything upon the workbench looks faintly enchanted. I have been gathering amber, smoke-grey glass and a small handful of acorn caps found along the lane. Something is coming. I am not entirely certain what yet.
